Tips for Prescription Eyewear
How do I measure my Pupillary Distance?
Pupillary Distance (or PD) measures the distance between the centers of your pupils. This measurement helps determine where you look through your glasses.
An adult's PD is typically between 54-74 mm. We recommend that you visit your local eye doctor or optical store for an accurate PD measurement.
There is typically no charge for this service.
About Your Lenses
What are blue blockers?
You can also equip your Island Optics lenses with a blue light filter.
This modern tech blocks the harsh glare of blue light that comes from the sun and digital screens.
This can help your eyes feel more comfortable and minimize headaches, primarily if you work behind a computer all day.
Ultraviolet (UV) Protection
All our optical and sunglass lenses contain UV-A and UV-B filters, which block 100% of UV rays and meet the rigorous US sun protection standards.

Polarized Lenses
Have you ever struggled to see on a sunny day, even when wearing your shades?
Check out our Polarized
Lenses. Our OX2 polarized lenses neutralize and slow down horizontally traveling light (such as light reflected
from water or snow).
This means reduced glare, relaxed eyes, and incredibly vibrant colors.
Oleophobic/Hydrophobic Coatings
These lens coatings offer effective waterproof, anti-dirt, and anti-smudge protection.
Polarized Sunglasses FAQ
What are Polarized Sunglasses?
Polarized Sunglasses use polarization to take the wave lengths of light that oscillate in many directions when there is reflection and glare and force them to vibrate in one direction thus filtering out the "noise" in the lightwaves. The noise causes glare and reflection. By filtering it, polarized lenses give you much better ability to see in harsh environments and see past glared surfaces like water to see into it much deeper. Polarized sunglasses are mostly made so that you can see better around water by reducing the amount of glare and reflection coming into your eyes.
Why Do We Need Polarized Sunglasses?
Polarized sunglasses actually do a lot more than just filter light. The best options like Island Optics also protect your eyes not only physically with polycarbonate lens options but also health wise as well by filtering out harmful UVA and UVB light that can harm and degrade vision over time. The polarization cuts down tremendously on eye fatigue as well. Not to mention being more keenly aware of what is going on under the surface of the water can help anglers and boaters be safer and more efficient in their activities around water like fishing.
What Color Lenses Are Best for Fishing?
The best color lenses for fishing depend mostly on the types of waters you fish most. If you fish large open bodies of water like the ocean or very large lakes with not as much shoreline fishing, a grey base with blue mirror tints will give you optimal viewing in those conditions. Subsequently a brown or amber base with a green mirror tint will give you more optimal viewing in shallow freshwater environments like you find fly fishing or bass fishing around shallow cover. And if you fish a lot at dawn, dusk or in the shade a lot, a lowlight yellow lens base with a low light silver tint can give you impressive ability to see into the water even when there isn't a lot of sunlight to light the water for you.
What Frames are Best for Fishing?
Typically speaking you want larger frames with high sides that fit close to your face. The more you block out side, top and rear light from coming into your eyes and around the lenses, the clearer and deeper you can see into the water. Any unfiltered light that slips around your polarized sunglasses lenses impedes what those lenses are doing to filter light to give you more optical clarity and vivid color in harsh sun. Our most popular frames for anglers are the Mako XL and the Angler frames that offer high sides and close fit. And we have several new fishing frames in development.
What Other Things do the Best Polarized Sunglasses Offer?
Our polarized sunglasses not only help filter light and provide you increased optical clarity and vivid color in harsh sunlight, but they also protect your eyes from harmful UVA and UVB rays. On top of that, our lenses have a range of proprietary OX2 coatings that make them hydrophobic, oleophobic, more scratch resistant, glare reducing and able to withstand salty environments. Our proprietary lamination process makes these lenses impervious to separation or delamination like you often find with lesser lenses.
Will Polarized Sunglasses help in the Shade or Low Light?
Yes! We carry low light lenses that greatly enhance your vision when the light is minimized at dawn and dusk as well as on overcast days or even in the shade. These are all prime times and locations to do activities like fishing where seeing in the water is critical to success. Reducing the glare sometimes matter more in shady areas than it does brighter areas so having a Low Light Lens option is crucial for people who need sunglasses on the water.
How do I Maintain My Polarized Sunglasses to Make Them Last?
We recommend keeping them stored in our cases for maximum protection when not on your face. Try not to leave them in your vehicle on excessively hot days and if you do get out in the salt water, a light rinse or mild non abrasive soap and water will clean them right back up good as new. Our sunglasses are warrantied against manufacturer defects.
Can I get Prescription Polarized Sunglasses for Fishing?

And we can do higher prescriptions that many other brands will refuse. We can also do progressive reader lenses for you to help see up close to tie on your lures or cut your line.
